Regular fitness is important for health and wellness and walking is a great way to get those minutes in. According to the Mayo Clinic, brisk walking can help you: maintain a healthy weight; prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes; strengthen your bones and muscles; improve your mood; and improve your balance and coordination (especially important for aging well).
What I love about walking for fitness is that you can literally do it anywhere. Right now I am on an RV trip and far from gyms and the kinds of workout classes I like best (kickboxing, dance and yoga). Walking is now my go-to activity for staying active on the road. Today’s walk was along a spectacular stretch of beach on the Washington coast. If your mobility permits, you just lace up your sneakers, grab a water bottle and head out the door. You can go old school and track your progress by logging minutes or mileage in a notebook – or go high tech with an app or tracker. I personally like my Fitbit Ulta. I know by looking at it whether I have had a day where I was active or whether I was sedentary. As many people do, I generally like to see 10,000 steps at the end of the day. For me, a side benefit of walking is how nourishing it is for my mind and soul. It gives me time and space to decompress, unwinding from any stress from my day. I practice mindfulness while walking, looking around for the beauty that surrounds me. I look, listen, smell and breathe in my surroundings. I practice gratitude.

I fully recommend Coach Neshama. She is warm and compassionate but perhaps even more than that, she holds s space for you that is accepting, inclusive and safe. I have always felt comfortable speaking with Neshama about very personal things. She devotes her time during your session entirely to you. She is focused completely on you with the intension of getting you to the place you want to be. I am a better person for the time I have spent with Neshama and I recommend her unconditionally. |
